Lens Design

The lens profile is cut using a selection of in-house or custom manufactured diamond tools. The characteristics of the diamond cutting face are controlled over an included angle of 100º. As such, for a diamond tool with a specific radius of curvature (Rc), the optical performance is controlled over a well defined region. This results in recommended maximums for both lens sag height and lens diameter. Given a required focal length, the design equations below dictate the radius of curvature. The cutting tool plunge depth gives lens sag, which controls lens diameter and therefore f/# number. If your design requires a non-standard diamond tool, we recommend you contact Epigem to discuss custom tool manufacture.
